3oz Roach, both bites were on feeder fished maggot. Mark advises the river
looked quite good but the weather was awful & may have had a negative
affect on the fishing. It definitely had a negative affect on him by the
end of the day, by all accounts!.

27 January 2008 |
Mark Dibble sends the following report after his day
out with Dad Mike on the Arun at Parham on the 27th January,
The river looked a really nice colour & pace, but I
think a ground frost last night put the mockers on the fishing a bit. I
managed seven Roach (best about 6oz), a Rudd & a Dace. All were taken on
float fished maggot using a long rod & Avon style float. Bites were
sporadic all day but the two & a half hours before the tide turned to run
in were totally dead, not a touch. Improved a bit on the run in after
feeding some groundbait. Nice weather though!
My Dad faired better taking a Pike that weighed 20lb
exactly after only half an hours fishing!, legered Mackerel was too
good for it to resist. It was his only fish of the day but the fight
it gave made it well worth while. A particularly strong fish this one!
A picture of Mike and his Pike can be
viewed here.

Fished the Rother today, Sat 12 Jan, the River was very
high and the nearby fields were flooded in about 2 foot of water, and there
was a strong current with lots of debris flowing through, I fished double
white maggot with maggot feeder filled with mix maggot and hemp, I had lots
of bites during the afternoon, and caught a roach, a small dace, and a large
dace and also an eel, I did hook into something that felt fairly big, but it
slipped the hook. |
|
2 January 2008 |
|
Mark Dibble certainly enjoyed his Christmas break,
fishing the Arun at Greatham on the 31st December he states in his
email that he was surprised by how heavily coloured he found the river.
Mark opted to fish a feeder containing hemp/maggot with maggot hook bait
beside near bank trees and he enjoyed plenty of bites with many of them
being quite tentative, Mark did however catch three Roach, but the bites
dried up & apparently it was dead by the bottom of the tide, Mark advised
that there were also six other anglers on the river and he heard some of
them had a few fish (see below report), additionally there was also a Pike
angler on the River who met with success, unfortunately the weight of the
Pike is as yet unknown.

failing to catch. Gavin walked to the top of the stretch and fishing the

|
28 December 2007 |
|
Mark Dibble fished the Arun at Parham on the 28th December and by
all accounts had a good day, but in Mark's own words " potentially it
could have been a real red-letter day". The river was perfect with good
colour & pace, but unfortunately the weather which has been nice
& mild for the last couple of days let Mark down. It was blowing a hooly
which made float fishing virtually impossible & forced him to fish a heavy
maggot feeder, he also shot myself in the foot by only taking small barbless
hooks which cost Mark a lot of fish in those conditions!
It was an hour before Mark's first fish, but after that
he had bites all day long, the bites only slowing when the tide turned to
run in. Mark caught 37 Roach, a couple of Skimmers & a chunky Dace. Most
of the Roach were between 3-6oz & he weighed the best one at 1lb 4oz. I
managed ten Roach on the float before being blown onto the feeder with
single/double maggot the hook baits.
Mark said in his email that he honestly thought with
less wind & better hook patterns he would have caught 20lb plus as he
never had so many bites on the Arun in Winter, unfortunately he has also
never missed so many bites, bumped so many fish off the strike or had so
many come off on the retrieve! Despite that Mark still enjoyed a good day
winter river fishing. No mistakes there.
Mark also met three Pike anglers on the bank during his
stint. One was fishing a lure & the other two were dead-baiting but they
all blanked. The lure angler did land a traffic cone though! Happy new
year!!
