Pulborough AS junior members participate in two leagues every year against other teams in the area (Henfield, Haywards Heath and Hassocks), The two leagues (Summer  and Winter) offer the chance for competing juniors to try their skills in friendly competition. Each of the leagues is different and offers different learning prospects. The summer league requires 4 people in each team and is fished on mainly lakes whereas the winter league requires 3 people in each team and is fished along rivers making it a much bigger challenge.

How Do I Get Involved?

Getting involved in the junior leagues is very easy; all you have to do is contact Steve Moulding (details on the Contact Us page).

This year the team trials will take place over a two week period the first on Saturday 4th April at Goose Green and the second on Saturday the 25th April 2009 at Moor Farm.

This is where all Pulborough juniors interested come and take part in a tester match. The skills you portray in it (not the position you finish) will determine whether you come in the A or B team. Even if you do not get into the team you are still welcome to attend all the matches as a reserve. This is a great opportunity as even if you don’t make the team on the day, you can still fish in the match and gain valuable experience.

How Does It Work?

The league matches are different from ordinary matches because the lake’s pegs are split into 4 sections in the summer and 3 in the winter. If 6 teams are competing they will all be represented in each section with the winner getting 6 points, 2nd position 5 points and so on. The total points for each team are then totalled from all sections and the team with the most points wins the match. However, this is not the end because the points are then added up over all 5 of the matches and after the final match, the team and the junior with the most points win the cups!

At these matches the atmosphere is very friendly with everybody being included. Often members from all clubs are seen chatting well after the match has finished. A typical example of this friendliness is the end of league barbecue where there is lots of friendly rivalry and lively banter.

Please note that all P.A.S. Senior matches are open to Junior anglers.

Development

Training sessions are on offer to Pulborough members through Steve Moulding and various other junior trainers, however, junior team members are also assisted during the matches and additional coaching sessions are also held to help juniors learn new skills. Junior coaches from all teams will assist any team member during matches, if required, including Steve Moulding and Graham Knight from Pulborough and ex junior team members. At the end of the day the whole idea of the competitions is for the juniors to have fun and learn how to catch more fish.
